Removing The Door Lock In 3 Steps
If you have a commercial door lock and you have decided you want to remove it yourself, we have the steps you’ll need to complete this task.
Step One
The first step is to take a tool with a sharp point, like an awl, or a punch tool and push it into the small hole situated on the side of the lock handle. This will cause a small tab inside the locking instrument to release. You should hear a small noise if you have completed this step correctly, and you will be able to pull the handle right off.
Step Two
Once the handle has been removed, the next step is to use a screwdriver to remove the escutcheon around the body of the lock. This is the decorative piece of metal that sits behind it on the door itself.
To remove the escutcheon, gently catch it under the edge (use a pick tool). In some instances, it will be screwed in place. There may be a tab that needs to be moved to release it from the door.
Once you pull off the screws or the tab holding the escutcheon in place, you will be able to remove the decorative plate (whether it is round or rectangular in shape) and start working on the main part of the lock itself.
Step Three
Next, you will need to unscrew the two screws that are holding the outside ring onto the main part of the lock. The screws need to be loosened on the top and the bottom before you can pull it off the protective ring. There should only be two screws left that will need to be removed to loosen the lock.
Grasp the main part of the lock firmly with one hand and pull it toward you firmly, and you should be able to free it from the latch. These are all the steps required to remove a commercial door lock from a door.
